AdvertisementIt’s worth mentioning that class 41 doesn’t necessarily mean that, if we’re talking about the new game, it will be online. The class is required for any kind of online feature, including smaller ones like leader boards and similar features. While there has been no official statement from Square Enix regarding what “Shellshock” may be, Square Enix’s subsidiary Eidos Interactive published a game under the same name over a decade ago. Shellshock: Nam ’67 was a third-person shooter developed by Guerrilla Games. Shellshock released on PC, PlayStation 2, and the original Xbox in late 2004 and was later followed by 2009’s Shellshock 2: Blood Trails.Meanwhile, there is no mention to what “Guardian Codex” is. If you allow some speculation, it may be a sequel or follow up to Square Enix’s 2012 card game RPG Guardian Cross on mobile platforms.
However, there is also the possibility that the mark can be connected to the “Shellshock” one.
The European Union Intellectual Property Office, or EUIPO for short, has revealed the recent trademarks acquired by Square Enix.
Square Enix has apparently filed applications to acquire the rights for trademarks “Shellshock”and “Guardian Codex.” Both of them were filed under classes 9 and 41, which are “computer game software” and “Entertainment services” such as online interaction and multiplayer of course.
However, the Shellshock trademark was also filed under class 16 as well, which is kind of interesting since it includes the rights to publish “printed matter, books, stationery, computer game strategy guides” and such.
You can find both trademarks filings below:
It is worth mentioning that this isn’t the first time we see the name Shellshock in the video game industry, since Guerrilla Games and Eidos Interactive released a game back in 2004 called Shellshock: Nam ’67, and it was a third-person shooter set in the Vietnamese War. It even got a sequel a couple of years late, in 2009, titled Shellshock 2: Blood Trails. So will this be a remaster or is this an entirely different game?
Let us know what you think of both trademarks.
